Knowing my hubby he will want to put ours right into the bank. (I have messed up finances pretty bad lately, even almost ended up single) But, I am going to talk to him about using it towards the purchase of a new TV. We are going to have to get a new one anyway, isn't that the end of this year that all tv's have will be digital or you need a adapter of some sort?

I won't get one....I get Social Security..... :grr:

at the risk of soundy like a crabby old lady..all this talk of bailing out the fiasco of the subprime mortgage market pisses me off too...just because folks didn't read the fine print on their mortgages, didn't really "understand" what they were getting into wth an adjustable rate and can no longer afford the balooning payments doesn't mean my tax dollars should bail them out.... (simplified version of that whole mess..)

I thought you might like that link gena......I was happy to hear that.....However, keep in mind it could be until Aug before you get it......
I was watching to see if it would be approved....and shocked to see how fast things can actually happen when they need too! they are hoping to put the money into the right hands fast, thinking that they will in turn pump it right back out which is what needs to be done......I really haven't read into all of it as much as I should have but I think it was suppose to help out small businesses too...Well see if that helps, I know things are getting bad for some of the local businesses around here.

Yes, Im so glad we have a fixed rate mortgage! Now, if we could just get a fixed rate property tax it would be better.....lol

Yes, I heard that as well, like 300 bucks....but Im not sure how they are gonna do it if they didn't pay in? Like my dad doesn't even file......???

And like the last time they pulled this, we had to pay it then back on the next years taxes , everyone who I did taxes for was kinda confused on that....they thought it was just a gift......this time is suppose to be different we are not suppose to have to pay it back....

I guess we will find out soon lol..

It will be interesting to se how it actually sorts out....and I can only assume that it will be considered income on your next years taxes...they aren't going to give a free lunch no matter whatthey want you to believe..as for the retirees..I think there was some talk of adding in some of the SS recipients, but not all..who knows what we will actually end up with when all is said and done. and I just have a hard time believeing that amounts they have chosen are going to be enough to truly be an economic stimulus.
And while half the world is thrilled with the drop in interest rates...for those of us who are savers not spenders that's a bite..
Seems like the government is rewarding those who are financially irresponsible.

I'm beginning to think my money would be safer in ammo box buried in the back yard...and safer yet if I converted it to gold...LOL

It wouldn't be much of a treasure...LOL but I love tresure hunting..now if I could just get Critter to remember where exactly in the strip pits he buried some ammo boxes in the 70's..we'd be in business LOL

I think SS folks have raised such a ruckus that folks on SS will end up being included...at least I hope!

I completely agree with Gretchen that it's no good to bail people out who made poor decisions in the first place. And besides, $1600 bucks isn't going to do a damn thing for someone with a $2500 mortgage and a $1500 income. It may help people tread water for another month, but it's not going to solve any real problems. To think that it's going to stimulate the economy is laughable. The rebate is nothing more than three things:

1) Bush trying to basically buy our love and an attempt to be remembered for something other than complete failure.
2)Smoke
3)Mirrors

First of all, it's a matter of timing. Bush announces this great plan to put money in the hands of Americans. This just happens to had taken place a week before the state of the union address. What happened a week before the last state of the union address? The petraeus report on Iraq. These 'good news' things always happen right before an address. That's beside the point though. The whole point is that the idea of this is to stimulate the economy and ward off a recession. There's no way in hell it's going to do either. What it will do, is add yet another 145 billion to the deficit. The idea is that people are going to go out and spend this money on goods. But most people will fall into two categories. A lot of people will save it, and a lot of people will spend it on paying bills. And even if people do buy goods, how is that going to benefit this country when just about everything you can buy is made in another country. The rebate also puts extra pressure on the Federal Reserve, which will in turn eventually have to raise interest rates, which will result in you paying more on anything with an adjustable rate.

So how do you actually come up with a real solution to stimulating the economy? Right off the bat you end the war. $100 billion+ a year is no joke and it's not like it's an investment. That's a hundred billion out of the budget and adding to the national debt every year with absolutely no return on investment. If we took that money and used it here instead of blowing shit up, we could lower the deficit, pay off the debt, put money into this country's crappy infrastructure, and lower taxes, which in the long run would put a hell of a lot more that $600 bucks in your pocket.

Aside from ending the war, you could actually encourage people to make and buy goods here at home. You raise import taxes and lower taxes for small businesses. Eventually, outsourcing will lead to a facade in our own country.

Anyway, I'm not saying I'm not happy about the rebate, after all, it's my own damn money they're giving back to me. I'll take it happily, but I still think the President is a....well a lot of things, none of them good.
